Partly Gilded Shakyamuni Statue Features:

Shakyamuni Buddha displays the Bhumisparsha “earth touching” mudra with his right hand. Additionally, this mudra is depicted with the right hand draped over the right knee and also the palm facing towards the body with the middle finger lightly touching the ground.

In the left hand of Shakyamuni Buddha, he holds the bowl of the mendicant monk in the palm. This is known as the Dhyana “meditation” mudra. Indeed, the alms bowl of the monk carries great symbolic meaning. It is believed to hold the three nectars which will cure the three poisons of greed, hatred and delusion. As a result, devotees who faithfully follow the teachings of the Dharma will also be able to extinguish the defilements.

Bodhisattva Lifetimes of Shakyamuni Buddha

For many lifetimes Shakyamuni Buddha roamed through samsara as a bodhisattva named Sumedha. His cycle of rebirth ended when he displayed the Bhumisparsha mudra under the Bodhi tree at the moment of ultimate awakening. This Shakyamuni Buddha statue is dedicated to the time that Prince Siddhartha became – Shakyamuni – the Buddha of our era.
